回家 Home

Home

Wang Chen showed the contradiction of “home” in this video as new immigration. The concept of “home” was separated into two aspects since Chen arrived in Australia: the apartment she is living in Australia is her "physical residence," and the flat in China with her parents was her "psychological habitat." However, it is fundamentally unable to unify them as Chen lacking the sense of cultural belonging for her "physical residence" with the new country, meanwhile, growing alienation with "psychological habitat" along with longer she left. Chen only can combine them into a whole helplessly through the medium of video and “going home” in the real sense of them.

How to unify the physical and psychological home as immigration? Time might solve it. However, some people perhaps never rediscover “home” again once leaving it.

It is worth mentioning that this video was the first "cooperation" between Wang Chen and her mother. The footages about community and flat in China were from Chen's mother taken via her smartphone.

This video will be shown in July 2019 on a group show at the Chinese History Museum, Melbourne Australia.
